This exhibition of photographs and journal entries by Nora Moore Lloyd (Ojibwe/Anishinaabe) provides a look into one artist’s ongoing work with bird rescue and release in the Chicago area. These photographs honor those birds whose lives have been interrupted by human activity. ‘A beauty shaped by absence,’ Lloyd says. Lloyd’s work is rooted in her Indigenous perspective of mutual respect and relationship to the land and nature.

“As a photographer, seeing an eagle, hawk, or falcon in flight and trying to capture on film their magnificence was always an exciting challenge … surpassed only by holding close a rescued hawk/falcon/owl during rescue and [transferring] them to a carrier—twenty seconds of intimacy that is indescribable," says Nora Moore Lloyd

In addition to Lloyd’s photographs, additional contributions from the ISM’s Zoology curators and the Director of Chicago Bird Collision Monitors hope to raise awareness about the human impact on bird populations in our state.  “The images startle us out of statistics and facts into the real-life danger faced by birds in our state. Lloyd’s photographs are filled with compassion, love and sadness for the journeys that are interrupted,” says Curator of Art Doug Stapleton.

The exhibition will be open to the public in the Museum’s first floor exhibit gallery beginning Wednesday, February 15 through Monday, October 23, 2023.  Admission is free.
