Illini State Park
Illini State Park is the type of park you think of when you think of big picnics and family gatherings. With its rustic Civilian Conservation Corps buildings and riverside picnic areas, Illini State Park offers beautiful views and a sense of history not found in many other parks.
I visited here as 4 day vacation with my family recently. By far the restrooms were the biggest disappointment the park has control over. We arrived to find that the showers had no working hot water. The other restroom facility in the park are not in good condition. Dirty and falling down. You'll also need to be prepared for constant barge traffic and noise from barges on the Illinois river as well as the trains that are constantly moving through. While the campground management obviously has no control over this it is worth mentioning. If your considering camping in the area I would consider looking at other options before booking a site at this park.
I am a local, so a bit prejudice ! I love this place. There a great trails on both sides of the bridge. You can go all the way to the locks and back (5 miles) or take a smaller hike. Just remember to stop at C P s Ice cream to reward yourself !
Beware no hot water at the showers on cool days and the water is super hot on hot days. Its been like that since last year I hope this year the problem is fixed because I really love coming here
Place is nice to canping. 10 dollar a nigth non electric.. Why go. At far campground. This have everything. You need to have good time with family
Let me begin by saying I'm not the camper in my family, my wife is. But the seasoned campers in the group believed the facilities could have been better maintained, and the groups making noise until 3 am should have been monitored at some point. But the site was clean and relatively dry. The train that runs nearby didn't wake me, but woke some of the other members of our group. It's a short drive over to Starved Rock.
